| | | Medical nutrition therapy (MNT) refers to the assessment and interventions facilitated by a Doctor and a Registered Dietitian to provide treatment of an illness, injury or disease condition. MNT can improve ones health and quality of life, as well as reducing the complications and need for prescription drugs. Common conditions that require MNT include, but are not limited to, diabetes, kidney disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, high triglycerides, underweight, and obesity.
Medical nutrition therapy is often covered by health insurance providers. A doctor's referral for MNT is required for a Registered Dietitian's services to be covered or reimbursed. The referral must include the client's current medical diagnosis and doctor's nutrition order. Recent medical documents including pertinent lab values and medications are also necessary.
The client should contact their health insurance company to get detailed information regarding their specific MNT coverage.
